About the Parks

SKCP has worked on the redesign of two neighborhood pocket parks, Hart Park and Benson Park,  over the past few years. The redesign plans focus on improvements to green infrastructure and versatility of space. SKCP has facilitated the formation of "Friends of" groups for both of these parks, and has participated in the citywide "Love Your Park Day" event in partnership with Philadelphia Parks and Rec. Together with the Friends groups, we have organized successful park events such as movie nights, potlucks, live music and more.

Benson Park

The Friends of Benson Park formed in the Fall of 2011, although members of the group have been active stewards of the park since the 1970s.

The Friends of Benson Park have organized events during Love Your Park week to landscape areas omitted from the larger redesign plan. They have planted over 200 perennial shrubs, flowers and herbs which they hope will attract new and old neighbors, and encourage them to spend more time in their nearby natural surroundings.

Hart Park & Playground

The Friends of Hart Park are a group of neighborhood residents organized since 2007 to promote the use, stewardship and improvement of Hart Park and Playground. The group is an active participant in city-wide Parks Revitalization efforts in partnership with Fairmount Park Conservancy and PPR.

The park is maintained by members of FOHP on a daily basis, and its increased use has been an effective way for neighbors to get to know and work with one another. Past events in the park have included Potluck Picnics, Live Music/Dancing, and Movie nights.
